Iodoprophylaxis is a practice aimed at ensuring the intake of iodine for the entire population to eliminate diseases caused by iodine insufficiency such as hypothyroidism.
LAW n°55/2005 MdS
In 2005, the Ministry of Health promulgated Law No. 55 which identifies salt enriched with iodine and products that contain it as a vehicle to ensure adequate iodine intake for all.
The effects and effectiveness on health of the iodoprophylaxis policy are assessed by the National Observatory for the Monitoring of Iodoprophylaxis in Italy (OSNAMI).
IODINE: what it is and why it is important
IODINE is a micronutrient present in our body (about 10-20 mg), but too often underestimated. IODINE plays an essential biological role in humans as it is an essential component of thyroid hormones.
Recommended doses of iodine: the daily iodine requirement is 150 mcg per day in adults, to be increased up to 250 mcg per day for pregnant and breastfeeding women, 90-120 mcg in growing children.
What are the foods that contain iodine?
The main foods that contain iodine are: crustaceans, molluscs and algae, sea fish, cow's milk, yogurt, and eggs.
Following a varied and balanced diet may often not be enough to meet the recommended iodine requirement, also because some foods, such as cabbage, broccoli, millet, soy and others, can reduce the absorption of iodine by the thyroid.
Why choose Presal® sea salt with protected iodine
The PROTECTION ensures that the iodine does not disperse and reaches the body.
With Presal® protected iodine, the AVAILABILITY of iodine and the ASSIMILATION by the body are guaranteed even after cooking the food (boiling, frying, in the oven, steaming, etc.), as demonstrated by laboratory analysis and from published clinical studies carried out by the Department of Endocrinology of the University of Pisa.

THE THYROID: what it is and how it works
The thyroid is a gland, located at the front of the neck, which performs various functions throughout our life. The hormones produced by the thyroid regulate the growth and development of the nervous system in children and, in all ages, act on the cardiovascular and bone systems, on lipid and glucose metabolism and on the maintenance of energy levels. For the proper functioning of the thyroid, iodine is essential, the deficiency of which can cause goiter and neuro-cognitive disorders.
